Licensing and safety carry the highest weight in our scoring because everything else is irrelevant if your money and data are not protected. Before we assess a single game or bonus, we confirm the operator holds a valid gambling licence, encrypts your connection, and can be held to account by a real regulator.
What we check
Valid, verifiable licence
We confirm the operator holds a current licence from a recognised authority such as the Malta Gaming Authority, the UK Gambling Commission or Curaçao, and that the licence number resolves on the regulator’s own register — not just a logo in the footer.
Encryption & data protection
We verify that the whole site runs over SSL/TLS encryption and that the operator publishes a clear privacy policy explaining how Irish players’ data is stored and handled.
Independent game testing
We look for RNG certification and payout auditing from independent labs such as eCOGRA or iTech Labs, which show the games have been tested for fairness by a third party.
Responsible gambling tools
We check for deposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion, plus visible links to support services such as GamblingCare.ie and GAMBLEAWARE.
Why it matters
A licensed operator is legally required to keep player funds separate from operating money, follow anti-money-laundering rules, and offer a complaints path if something goes wrong. An unlicensed site offers none of these protections.
Ireland’s new Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI) is building a domestic licensing regime, but until an operator is licensed here they should still hold a reputable overseas licence to serve Irish players safely.
